About the year of our Lord 997, Adelbert, Bishop of Prague, with two companions, set out on a missionary tour to the shores of the Baltic. The savage inhabitants killed him. Still Christianity gradually gained ground. As the ages rolled on, idolatry disappeared, and nominal Christianity took its place. The people were poor, ignorant, widely dispersed, and but partially civilized. During weary centuries, as generations came and went, nothing in that region occurred of interest to the world at large. When, in the sixteenth century, Protestantism was rejected by Southern Europe, it was accepted by the inhabitants of this wild region. At the commencement of the eighteenth century, there was found upon the southern shores of the Baltic a small territory, about as large as the State of Massachusetts, called the Marquisate of Brandenburg. The marquis belonged to a very renowned family, known as the House of Hohenzollern. At the distance of some miles east of this marquisate, there was a small duchy called Prussia. The Marquis of Brandenburg, who had come into possession of the duchy, being a very ambitious man, by skilful diplomacy succeeded in having the united provinces of Prussia and Brandenburg recognized by the Emperor of Germany as the kingdom of Prussia. The sovereigns of Southern Europe looked quite contemptuously upon this newborn and petty realm, and were not at all disposed to receive the parvenu king into their society as an equal. Berlin was the capital of the Marquisate of Brandenburg Konigsberg was the capital of the Duchy of Prussia. Though the marquis, Frederick, was crowned at Konigsberg, he chose Berlin as the capital of his new kingdom. He took the title of Frederick I. The king had a son, Frederick William, then ten years of age. As heir to the throne, he was called the Crown Prince. When eighteen years of age, he married Sophie Dorothee, his cousin, a daughter of George, Elector of Hanover, who subsequently became George I. of England. On the 24th of January, 1712, a son was born to the Crown Prince, who received the name of Frederick, and subsequently became renowned in history as Frederick the Great. The babe, whose advent was hailed throughout the kingdom with so much joy as heir to the crown, had at that time a sister, Wilhelmina, three years older than himself. At the time of the birth of Frederick, the monarchy was but twelve years old. His grandfather, Frederick I.; was still living; and his father was Crown Prince...

I love the Abbott brothers' books. This print-on-demand copy, however, is not so enjoyable to use. OCR scan typos are not surprising, but still annoying. One can look past a few. However, the print size/shape are quite uncomfortable. Please print future copies using a font that is not so narrow. All the letters appear rather 'squished'. Practice good economy with paper usage, certainly, but please make the font comfortably readable. Thank you. TS

The History of Prussia [Didactic Press Paperbacks] John Abbott 9781545512005 Books Reviews

An excellent account of Germany's unification and their commitment to making war. The author gives an accurate account of the facts but is not very comprehensive. The issue about the Ems telegram is omitted and too much contents is spent on the French - Prussian ware of 1890.
Interesting ass a first read on this topic. The writing style is dated and cumbersome; too many long quotes from contemporary journalists; nevertheless, worth the price!
It claimed to be a full history of the Prussian/Brandenburg state and it started much to late. Little about the Mark of Brandenburg and how the Hohenzollerns went from small time Southern German nobles to Kings of the Prussian State which was the main purpose I bought it. After Frederick the Great and his father, it filled in some holes for me, but in the final analysis it was too brief about the lesser rulers of Prussia and way to wordy about the important ones which I had studied already. Was also very uneven. But there aren't many books that even try to cover what I wanted.
I have been interested, and investigating, my family history/genealogy. Reading The History of Prussia has been a great help in understanding, and deciphering, how various nations crossed with others. However, approximately the first half of the book was okay; the second half focused on France. I wanted to learn more about Prussia--not France.
If you are interested in European history, this is an insightful easy read with loads of interesting information. I happened upon this book as I am researching my family history. Although the book mainly highlights the wars between Prussia, France, Austria and the ever changing national borders, and conquering armies, it gave me a great perspective of what life would have been like for those in the army or the peasants, and why there was mass immigration from Germany to the New World.
When was this written? Published? Source? No page numbers, no index, no table of contents. While there was many, many stories of Prussia & French history, this was too cumbersome of a read for me to put all the pieces together. I just did not find this useful for my pursuit of understanding my ancestor's lands.
It is a good read about the basic history of Prussia post-1700. Unfortunately, the historical accuracy of the entire book is in question because it completely skipped the war of Austrian Succession which took place over 8 years. This book denies it ever happened, so I cannot recommend it because the historical accuracy can't be trusted.

The author also goes into long monologues about the supposed treachery of Frederick the Great. However the author feels about his character, I was looking for more of an Unbiased and factual approach to his reign.
